Jared Goff questions 'maturity' of Rams for blindsiding him with trade to Lions

Jared Goff has been a member of the Detroit Lions for four years but no matter how far removed we get from the blockbuster trade involving Matthew Stafford in 2021, it still makes its way into the news.

Goff is featured in the new season of Netflix’s “Quarterback” series and in it, he opens up about being dealt from the Los Angeles Rams to the Lions. At the time, it was a surprising move by the Rams, and even Goff was completely blindsided by it.

Needless to say, he didn’t appreciate the way it was handled by the Rams. He questioned why he wasn’t given a heads up beforehand about the possibility that he’d be traded, calling out the maturity of those involved – which certainly included Sean McVay.

Here’s how he explained it.

“Three weeks after the last game of the season, get a call from Sean and really did not expect anything,” he said. “He lets me know they’re trading me to Detroit and I’m like, ‘Whoa, OK, all right. What the hell? What’s happening?’

“I would say about 30 seconds after that phone call, it was on Twitter.”

Goff has said in the past that it made him feel like he wasn’t wanted by the Rams. He still feels that way, adding to it that he felt “betrayed” by his former team. He wishes the Rams told him beforehand that they were thinking about cutting ties but because there was no warning, he was blindsided.

“You feel like you’ve been betrayed, or like, you’re not wanted. And I think for me, ultimately, it was the fact that there was not a conversation had and there wasn’t like a, ‘Hey, we’re thinking of moving on’-type of thing. There was nothing. You wish that it wasn’t such a blindside and you wish that there was some sort of maturity, I guess, to have that conversation and to be able to let me know what’s going on and how things went down and why this is happening.”

Goff had just signed an extension with the Rams in 2019 after leading them to the Super Bowl, which kept him under contract through the 2024 season. He didn’t think he’d be traded less than two years after signing that new deal, but his play in 2019 and 2020 should’ve given him at least some indication that the Rams may not be totally thrilled with his performance.

McVay has said a number of times that he wishes he handled the entire situation better and admits he did a poor job communicating with Goff. There were even reports about how fractured their relationship was, with one rumor saying Goff hung up on McVay when he called about the trade.

There’s obviously no love lost between these two parties, which only adds fuel to the rivalry fire every time the Rams and Lions square off.
