In the race for San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors District 2, an incumbent is asking voters for reelection while a new contender seeks a first chance.
The June 2 primary election will determine whether Paul Canepa, who has served as the District 2 supervisor since 2023, wins reelection or whether newcomer Lauren Cardinalli wins the seat.
Visit our Elections page throughout the day Tuesday, June 2, for the latest news, results and more as the California 2026 Primary gets underway.
The district has a population of 160,184 and covers the Stockton area.
Canepa is a Stockton native who attended St. Mary’s High School and San Joaquin Delta College. His family business, Canepa’s Car Wash, has operated since 1955.
Cardinalli listed herself as a mother, salesperson and coach on the ballot.
According to her LinkedIn, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in earth science and began a career in civil engineering focused on hydrogeology.
Before being elected to the board of supervisors, Canepa served on the Lincoln Unified School District Board of Trustees for six years and the Stockton City Council for eight years.
While serving as board chairman last year, Canepa spoke about the groundbreaking of the Be Well Campus in French Camp — a behavioral health project.
He said the project, a new behavioral health care facility, would “ensure that San Joaquin County residents can access compassionate, effective care close to home, while also easing the pressure on our hospitals and emergency services.”
Neither candidate appeared at recent forums where they were given the opportunity to answer questions from the community.
Cardinalli and Canepa did not return phone calls seeking comment before publication.
