How to be a good mother-in-law, voting for Orozco | Letters

Be kind to your daughter-in-law

On Mother’s Day in some relationships there unfortunately exists a spirit of animosity between mother-in-law and the woman who married her son. This dislike can be so strained that the daughter-in-law will forbid her husband’s mother from seeing the grandchildren. Several times I have personally witnessed this.

Such hostility can be avoided, but responsibility lies with the more experienced mature woman. Right out of the gate, future mothers-in-law, be kind and friendly to the woman who loves your son. Accept her, warts and all.

On her birthday, take her to lunch and hand her a gift of something permanent that she likes. She will treasure it and, when she looks at it, she’ll think of you.

Restrain, and I know this can be difficult, from controlling the marriage and the grandchildren. Avoid frequent criticism of her. Be grateful your son has someone who loves him. Remember, you’re not going to be around forever.

Lastly, if you’re a believer, pray for her. “You can’t hate someone you are lifting in prayer,” said the late Pastor John Strubhar in a sermon at Ventura Missionary Church. If you follow these selected points, I guarantee you will reap peace and joy. Good luck.

Why I’m voting for Orozco

If I’d thought in my wildest imaginings that a county supervisor would not devote full time to his job, I would have asked Jeff Gorell, in 2022, before he was elected, to pledge that, as a public servant doing a full-time county job, he would give it his full professional focus. Sadly, I didn’t ask and, as it turned out, his focus was not only on his full-time public service job. He has four outside consulting jobs as well.

However, I feel very lucky to have recently discovered a candidate, running for our District 2 Supervisor position, who would focus on the job. She has a wonderful talent, as well, of bringing people together to find solutions to the myriad problems our county faces today. Her name is Ashley Orozco.

With a master’s degree in public administration, Ashley has been able to develop these leadership skills through both her professional and volunteer positions. Professionally, she currently has a prominent position in the Finance and Accounting Department of an Oxnard defense contract company. Public sector positions have included Congressional Field Director, as well as member of several Thousand Oaks government committees, and, currently, elected board member of Conejo Recreation and Parks Department.

She has volunteered for community organizations such as Adelante, Planned Parenthood, Bowls of Hope and Community Action Fair, led an initiative to provide home delivery services to families in need, and received “40 Under 40 Award” from the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Ashley grew up in Ventura County, attended Cal Lutheran University and currently lives in Newbury Park. Please vote Ashley Orozco for county supervisor to restore focus and good governance to District 2.
