It might seem impossible but this is the last full week of regular-season high school baseball to be played before playoffs begin later next week.
Below find this week’s submitted scores and submitted game stats.
McAuley comes up aces as Somers tops John Jay-Cross River
CROSS RIVER — The radar gun was pointed at Ryan McAuley all game Thursday.
But the Somers junior appeared unfazed by that and unfazed by a couple of miscues behind him by a defense that would later pick him up at a crucial moment.
McAuley went the distance, allowing five hits, walking just one and striking out eight — multiple hitters with a devastating cutter/slider hybrid — in a 7-3 win over host John Jay-Cross River.
Only one John Jay run was earned.
John Jay which got into an immediate hole, walking four Tuskers in the first inning and having to switch pitchers just five batters into the game, came within inches of cutting Somers’ lead to one at 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth. But Somers centerfielder Gavin Kelly robbed Luke Fisch with a full-stride running grab in the right/centerfield gap with two outs and two aboard.
That occurred an inning after Kelly gunned Fisch out at home on Mason Federice’s two-out single that scored Amogha Bhat with the Wolves’ second run.
Tyler Venturini put an exclamation point on the Tuskers’ win in the top of the seventh with a long, solo home run over the left-centerfield fence off junior Henrik Zhai, who was largely stellar in relief, giving up only two earned runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.
What it means
The win was a continuation of Somers’ rollercoaster season. The Tuskers, who’d fallen 5-4 to the Wolves earlier in the week, are now 9-10.
John Jay-Cross River is 12-7.
Player of the game
McAuley, who was pitching in front of a Div. I college scout, who had him hitting 90 mph on his radar gun, took top game honors. He had a first-inning RBI walk to help his own cause. But it was his cool and controlled approach on the mound and his ability to use several pitches effectively that stood out.
Game stats
Somers jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead in part off Justin Thomas’s long, two-run double to center and Matt Giudice two-run single to center. The hits were back-to-back.
An infield error contributed to the Tuskers getting their sixth run in the top of the second with Gavin Kelly, who’d led off with a single, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
John Jay’s Aidan Chernick, who’d reached on an error, scored the Wolves’ first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a two-out McAuley balk.
Federice, who was subbed in at short, had a big defensive game. Besides a fine running grab with his back to the infield earlier in the game, he recorded all three outs in the sixth. The first saw him lunge right to his knees to snare a wicked one-hopper off the bat of Henry Babagallo before throwing him out. He then robbed Kelly, going left and falling to snare his hot liner.
They said it
Somers coach J.T. Genovese called McAuley “our ace,” and indicated he was maturing, now changing speeds and employing multiple pitches, rather than just throwing hard. Some Wolves simply flailed at his low, outside cutter/slider.
Of being scouted, McAuley said, “It’s always like extra pressure but they’re there because they like me.”
He said that was motivating.
“I felt great out there,” he said, adding his team had hit “very, very well” and his outfielders’ defense had been “amazing.”
John Jay-Cross River is hoping to get its own ace, Jacob Storch, back for the Section 1 playoffs.
The senior and four-year starter went down with a hamstring injury after opening the season with wins over John Jay-East Fishkill and Nanuet, Wolves coach Ted Lawrence noted.
He said he would have started Thursday’s game if fully mended. But he liked the job Zhai did in relief, noting he’d hit his spots.
