What is National Night Out?

Organizers described National Night Out as “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie,” according to the NNO website.

“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community,” the group stated. “Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”

Started in 1984, the National Night Out campaign has grown to include thousands of communities in all 50 U.S. states.

Most regions observe the occasion on the first Tuesday in August, while Texas and some other areas hold events the first Tuesday in October.

Common features include community block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and demonstrations.
