Organizers expect thousands of people will wave picket signs on July 18 in Ventura County rallies focused on civil rights, voting rights, democracy and protesting President Donald Trump’s administration.
A “Good Trouble Lives On” rally in front of the Ventura County Government Center will likely draw smaller crowds than the massive turnouts of the “No Kings” rally in March. But it is still expected to bring 3,000 to 5,000 people, event spokesperson Beth Mansfield said. More than 200 people are expected at an afternoon protest at the corner of Tapo Canyon Road and Alamo Street in Simi Valley.
The protests are named in honor of the late civil rights activist John Lewis, a Democratic congressman from Georgia. He used the phrase “good trouble” to describe peaceful, non-violent action meant to challenge injustice.
The rallies are part of a nationwide weekend call of action sponsored by a coalition of partners.
The Simi event will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Ventura event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Victoria Avenue and Telephone Road.
“What we try and do is have a place where like-minded people who are concerned about democracy come together,” Mansfield said.
