In December, the Golden State Warriors signed former Oklahoma City Thunder forward Malevy Leons to a two-way contract. The Dutch forward stepped in right away, making 25 appearances for the Warriors, two of which were starts. On the season, Leons averaged 3.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.6 steals in 11 minutes per game.
At times when Leons was on the floor, it seemed like the Warriors had found a diamond in the rough. Leons showcased plenty of hustle and grit throughout his tenure, displaying his defensive prowess and versatility at 6’9″. That said, Leons’ offensive play looked unpolished at times, suffering from inefficient shooting. On the year, Leons shot 44.4% from the field, 25% from 3-point range and 78.9% from the free-throw line. While his high defensive work rate may earn him the potential to break into an NBA rotation, the strides he makes offensively will ultimately be the difference-maker. Luckily for the Warriors, they’ll have another offseason to work with him, as Leons has one more year remaining on his current two-way deal.
