In a game that couldn’t even be decided by overtime, the Saugatuck girls soccer team survived a 3-2 win in a shootout over Byron Center Zion Christian in the Division 4 district semifinals on Tuesday, May 26, at Saugatuck.
Avery Smith dished out assists to Neave Rewa and Ellery Panapento during regulation but Zion Christian matched the Trailblazers goal for goal and sent the game to overtime.
With no scoring in either overtime period, the game went to a shootout where Saugatuck goalie Ginny Cerneugel made two huge saves to secure the win and send Saugatuck to Saturday’s 10 a.m. district final against Black River.
Black River 4, Fennville 0
Black River defeated Fennville 4-0 in the other semifinal. Jennaviecia Hessel got the scoring started with 5:22 remaining in the first half on an assist from Olivia Castro. Abi Rhoades added two more early in the second half on assists from Delyla Martinez and Meghan Davis. Davis ended the scoring on an assist from Leah Goudie with 33:24 remaining in the game.

Meanwhile, the No. 7 Fennville volleyball team defeated Kalamazoo Christian 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18 in the first round of regionals on Tuesday, May 26, to advance to the regional semifinals at No. 3 Gull Lake on Thursday, May 28.
The Blackhawks finished 12-1 at home this season and are 21-6-3 heading into the Division 2 regional semifinals.
