The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District continues to ramp up fire safety and preventions operations across the county, including the High Desert.
The agency said smoke may be visible in parts of the High Desert as San Bernardino County Fire continues its fuel reduction project in the Las Flores Ranch area of Hesperia.
The project, which began Monday, will continue through Thursday, May 7, near the south end of the Silverwood Development in Summit Valley near Highway 138.
Smoke may be visible at times to residents and travelers in the area as firefighters will be on scene for the duration of the project, fire officials stated.
Over the years, fire crews have conducted fuel reduction projects to reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires, fire officials stated.
Burn permit restrictions
Meanwhile, the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District has suspended all open burning and burn permits effective Friday, May 1, 2026, due to early fire activity, high winds, elevated temperatures, and low fuel moisture.

The suspension remains in effect until lifted, and violations may result in administrative or legal action, fire officials stated.
