A pump fake is nothing new for basketball fans but former UCLA Bruin Donovan Dent hit fans with a unique pump fake on Monday. After announcing his retirement from basketball earlier this offseason, Dent is seeking an additional season of NCAA eligibility.
In late May, Dent stated that he was going to focus his expertise on helping coach the next generation of basketball players but a change of heart has led to Dent looking for one more season of college hoops.
Dent told KRQE, a news station in New Mexico, that he applied for a fifth season of eligibility. Dent played three full seasons with the New Mexico Lobos before joining the Bruins last year.
“I just looked at it as another opportunity because I was completely done with it, and seeing that they made a fifth year possible and all of my coaches and my family were like,’ Let’s give it one more,’” Dent told KRQE. “They kind of talked to me about it, and I was like, okay. We just look at it like another opportunity for a blessing, I guess.”
Dent stated that he did not know where he would play if granted an additional year of eligibility. The Bruins roster sits at 13 players, two shy of the 15-player cap, which means there could potentially be room in Westwood for the Riverside native.
If Dent were to be granted an additional season, many teams, including potentially UCLA, would be interested in the experienced guard. Dent scored 13.3 points and dished out 7.6 assists in his lone season with the Bruins last year. There were highs and lows throughout Dent’s season but he was still one of the best pure point guards in the country, with 11 games with double-digit assist totals.
