The Chargers and Derwin James agreed to terms on a massive three-year, $76.5 million deal, which has made him the highest-paid safety in the league for the second time in his career.
James is set to earn more than $25 million per year, which sets a new benchmark for the position. The 29-year-old is guaranteed to earn $57.5 million.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh called James “the best safety I’ve ever seen in the history of the National Football League” last season, a testament to how much the Chargers value the veteran’s presence on the defense.
James is the only defensive back with 30-plus quarterback hits, 30-plus tackles for loss and 30-plus passes defended over the last five seasons. It’s safe to say the longest-tenured Charger has earned the contract.
