Deputies plan weekend sobriety checkpoint in Apple Valley

Sheriff’s officials are planning to hold a DUI checkpoint in Apple Valley on Saturday night.

The checkpoint will be set up from 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and continue through 2 a.m. the following morning, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department statement. The location was not released.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” the agency stated. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Officials choose the locations of checkpoints based on prior history of DUI-related crashes.

In addition to alcohol, deputies will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by other substances, including marijuana and medications, officials said. Even some over-the-counter medicines may impair a person’s ability to drive safely.

On average, those convicted of a first-time DUI face $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with automatic driver license suspension.

Funding for this weekend’s checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
