Child dead after gaining access to gun inside San Bernardino County home

A 2-year-old boy is dead after he gained access to a gun and shot himself, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials reported.

Authorities reported that at around 5:27 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, Highland deputies were dispatched to a home on Victoria Street for a 2-year-old child who had been shot.

Arriving deputies began life-saving measures on the child before emergency medical personnel responded and transported the child to a hospital, where he died soon after, sheriff’s officials stated.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide and Crimes Against Children Details also responded and took over the investigation.

Investigators believe the child gained access to a gun hidden between two seat cushions on a couch and shot himself. Cobb, Bright and a second child were inside the home when the shooting occurred. That child was taken by Child and Family Services, sheriff’s officials stated.

Cobb and Bright were arrested on suspicion of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death, according to sheriff’s officials. They remain in jail at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, with bail set at over $1.3 million.
