The Chargers announced that they have agreed to a new contract extension with Derwin James Jr., making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL for the second time.
The deal, a 3-year, $75.6 million agreement worth over $25 million per year, surpasses the previous top mark, held by Ravens’ Kyle Hamilton. Terms include $57.5 million guaranteed.
General manager Joe Hortiz called the move a “high priority,” emphasizing the organization’s desire to keep James a Charger for life, so they acted decisively to get the deal done.
A five-time Pro Bowler and multiple-time All-Pro, James has been the heartbeat of the Chargers’ defense since being drafted in 2018 out of Florida State.
By locking him up, the Bolts avoid entering 2027 free agency without their defensive anchor.
