Chargers offensive line coach speaks on left guard competition at OTAs

Chargers offensive line coach Butch Barry provided updates on the battle at left guard as the team concludes OTAs this week. The position has featured a competition between veteran free-agent addition Kayode Awosika and second-round rookie Jake Slaughter.

Awosika has taken the majority of first-team reps, while Slaughter rotates in and continues developing at both guard and center.

On Awosika, Barry said: “Kayode has done a nice job. He’s a guy who’s been around football for a while, veteran player, has done really good things. He’s all in, he’s been great with the group.”

On Slaughter, he noted: “It’s great, he’s learning everything. He’s doing center, he’s doing guard, he’s doing a lot of different things. He’s been great to work with, he’s really, really sharp, he’s all in on it, he loves ball… He’s doing a great job.”

Additionally, re-signed on a one-year deal, Trevor Penning has been cross-training at both left and right guard, but he has primarily worked with the third-string units.

Barry stressed the bigger picture: “Everyone is competing. It’s awesome, we’re rolling different guys. Like Coach [Harbaugh] says, all competitors are welcome.”

As minicamp and training camp loom, all eyes will be on that spot to see who ultimately earns the fifth and final starting offensive line spot.
