A 66-year-old Barstow man died in a motorcycle crash in a construction zone on the 40 Freeway early Tuesday, authorities said.
Vincent T. Rodriguez died in the crash, which took place just after 7 a.m. Dec. 16 on the eastbound side of the freeway, east of Iwo Jima Street, according to California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.
He was riding a 1992 Honda motorcycle when, “for reasons still under investigation, the rider veeredto the right, causing the motorcycle to strike orange construction cones within an active constructionzone,” CHP officials said in a written statement.
“After the initial impact, the rider traversed to the right, towards the right shoulder, and subsequently struck a construction vehicle, which was parked on the right shoulder, of eastbound I-40,” the statement said. He was wearing a helmet.
Paramedics pronounced Rodriguez dead at the scene.
The investigation was ongoing, however, DUI was not initially suspected as a factor, officials said.
CHP Barstow Area Commander Nicholas King urged motorists to use extra caution when driving through construction zones.
“The California Highway Patrol encourages drivers to remain alert in construction zones, pay close attention to posted traffic signs, and comply with all traffic laws,” he said.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the CHP’s Barstow Area Office at (760) 255-5900.
