Analyst suggests former 49ers Pro Bowler should sign with Chiefs

While San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been the talk of the town recently, there’s another wideout with a history with the team who is still looking to find his next home.

That wideout is Deebo Samuel, who hit the market this offseason after San Francisco sent him to the Washington Commanders for a 2025 fifth-round pick before last season.

Aiyuk may be taking Samuel’s spot in Washington, leaving Samuel open to sign elsewhere, and ESPN’s Aaron Schatz recently identified the Kansas City Chiefs as a top landing spot for the receiver.

“The Rashee Rice situation is fairly confusing for the Chiefs,” Schatz wrote. “Coach Andy Reid says that Rice will be healthy enough for training camp, but is he going to face a suspension from the league for off-field conduct? It would be good for the Chiefs to find another strong slot target who can be insurance for Rice and can provide wide receiver depth on the outside.

“Enter veteran Samuel. He had a bit of an off 2025 season with a career-low 10.1 yards per reception with the Commanders, but he still managed to gain 727 receiving yards with five touchdowns. At age 30, there’s probably still something left in the tank, and his ability to also take carries from the backfield makes him extra fun for Reid to play with in his game-planning.”

At 30 years old, Samuel is probably closer to the end of his career than the beginning of it, but he could still be a playmaker for a team that desperately needs some consistent help for Patrick Mahomes.

Samuel was an all-around weapon in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and it’s exciting to imagine what he could look like in Reid’s offense.
