49ers QB Brock Purdy had a 3-word reaction to Trent Williams' return

The biggest news of the offseason for the San Francisco 49ers came this week when veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams signed an extension to remain with the team despite weeks of uncertainty. The news not only mean that the 49ers’ most important offensive linemen would stick around, but that quarterback Brock Purdy got his blindside protector back.

Unsurprisingly, Purdy was stoked when he heard the news. And when asked how he felt about the decision to bring Williams back, the 49ers quarterback had just three words to say at first.

“I was juiced,” Purdy told reporters Monday. “He’s got a lot left and I know he’s going to have a chip on his shoulder to go out and get a ring for him and his resume and his career and I want to help him do that.”

Purdy’s numbers with and without Trent Williams are pretty staggering.

In eight games that Williams didn’t play, the 49ers are 1-7 and Purdy completed 67.5% of his passes for 2,015, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also took 17 sacks. But in the 40 games with Williams, Purdy completed 68% of his passes for 9,670 yards, 75 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. The 49ers and Purdy also went 31-9 with Williams on the field.

This is why it was such a priority for San Francisco to get a deal done for Williams. Even though he’s 38 years old and missed time due to injury, he’s still one of the best left tackles in the NFL.

Now, this doesn’t mean the 49ers shouldn’t look for his eventual successor, but the team doesn’t need to worry about it’s 2026 starting left tackle just yet.
