Why the Advanced Manufacturing District matters for Genesee County | Opinion

Our team at the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance is dedicated to creating new opportunities to help turn around decades of job loss and population decline in Genesee County.

You can see that commitment in the progress we continue to make to create a turnkey site in Mundy Township for an advanced manufacturing project that would create at least 2,000 jobs and invest $2 billion in our region.

And our work is getting noticed. We have heard from those looking for places to locate a job-creating project that this site, named the Advanced Manufacturing District of Genesee County (AMD), is the best in America.

Right now, our work on the AMD is boosting tax revenues by delivering fair value for nearly 200 property owners who have been a part of this process to date. We also are focused on long-term benefits that come with bringing a job-creating project here, including generating millions of dollars in additional revenues for our local businesses, schools, roads and public safety, including police and fire services.

We have acquired more than 1,300 acres to create a build-ready site for an advanced manufacturer. This is critical to our efforts to land a job-creating project. In today’s fast-moving economy, advanced manufacturers are prioritizing places where they can confidently build, access power and tap into a high-quality workforce.

The Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance is proud of our work to build a strong future here while also helping organizations serving those in need. Our team regularly looks for ways to reuse materials and partner with local nonprofits seeking materials from buildings acquired in the compilation of the AMD.

Genesee County residents know this is a special place with a talented workforce and a can-do spirit. And our community also understands the importance of providing opportunities that allow young people to find local jobs so they can build a life close to home. Our incredible community now has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide exciting career opportunities and help shape our future.

Our ongoing work is consistent with bipartisan efforts to bring manufacturing back to our country and position the U.S. as a leader in the domestic production of essential technology. We look forward to answering questions about our work in Genesee County and keeping you informed about our progress on developing this site.
