What does enhanced risk for severe weather mean?

The five levels of categorical risk are based probability forecasts of tornadoes, winds, hail, according to the National Weather Service. With that, there are levels of uncertainty with what will occur during a storm.

“Forecasting rare events such as tornadoes and the occurrence of large hail and damaging wind gusts is a difficult process and one that contains a large amount of uncertainty. It is important not to rigidly associate the type of risk area (e.g., 2-SLGT-yellow) with the severe potential for any given thunderstorm in the risk area,” the NWS said.

So, just because there is a slight risk of severe weather doesn’t mean there will be slight severe weather. All severe weather should be take seriously.
