When will it start storming in Michigan? Rain, wind, possible hail and tornados on Wednesday

Rain and thunderstorms will cover Michigan as early as today, June 17, and intensify through June 18. There is now an enhanced risk for severe weather for southern areas of Michigan, which could see hail, strong winds and possible tornadoes.

Officials have been tracking the low pressure system moving eastward through the Midwest. From June 17-18, rain and thunderstorms will occur in the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, though, mid- to southern areas will see the worst of the storm late on June 18, according to the National Weather Service.

“Strong to severe storms are expected on Wednesday from parts of southern Missouri northeastward into southern lower Michigan. Damaging winds, isolated hail, and a few tornadoes will be possible. More isolated severe storms may develop across the southern Plains,” the NWS said.

Statewide, the severe weather is expected to calm after June 18, though lingering rain is in the forecast on Juneteenth, June 19.

In the Lower Peninsula, areas such as Lansing, Ann Arbor and Coldwater are expected to see enhanced severe weather, while the entire Lower Peninsula will see a range of marginal to slight severe weather. Wind gusts could reach 20-70 mph.

“The enhanced risk for severe weather has been expanded across southern Michigan for higher than normal chances to exhibit severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts,” the NWS in Detroit said on X.

Temperatures will remain humid with highs ranging in the upper 70s and upper 80s, with Detroit seeing 84 degrees on June 18.

Residents in the Upper Peninsula are expected to see highs in the upper 70s, and wind gusts up to 25 mph.
