Weather service confirms Monday tornado. What they're saying

The Gaylord National Weather Service office on Wednesday, May 20, said it had confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down during thunderstorms that took place two days earlier.

The damage survey determined a tornadic waterspout with winds of about 65 mph briefly touched down on Big Brandford Lake in southern Otsego County.

“The waterspout produced minor damage to tree branches and free standing objects along a portion of the eastern shore of the lake,” the NWS report said.

Michigan has experienced 16 tornadoes already this year.

The weather service said the waterspout occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, and traveled about a tenth of a mile and was about 20 yards wide.

The storms on Monday dropped more than 2 inches of rain in the Cheboygan area and more than an inch at Houghton Lake, Kalkaska and Traverse City.
