Update: Congratulations to Richmond’s Katie Shuboy for being voted Detroit Free Press Athlete of the Week!
It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Girls Prep Athlete of the Week for June 8-14.
This week’s poll features four players from last week’s soccer and softball championship tournaments.
Voting will be open until 3 p.m. Friday, June 20. We’ll announce the winner here shortly after the poll closes.
Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):
Jordyn Bonnema, Kalamazoo Christian, soccer
The senior midfielder played all of Kalamazoo Christian’s 4-1 Division 4 state championship victory over Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett on Saturday, June 14, scoring two goals in the second half.
Abigail Curtis, Saline, softball
Curtis’ weekend performances contributed to Saline’s first Division 1 softball state championship, defeating Hudsonville, 5-4, on Thursday and South Lyon, 5-2, on Saturday. The junior pitcher had 21 strikeouts in 14 innings across the two games.
Katie Shuboy, Richmond, softball
Richmond’s ace pitched back-to-back complete games leading to the school’s first Division 2 state championship in four years. Shuboy threw 22 strikeouts and allowed two hits during the team’s final two games.
Ashtyn Stuck, Byron Center, soccer
The freshman defender ended her first season on a high note, leading Byron Center to its first Division 1 girls soccer state championship. Center defeated Saline, 1-0, on Saturday with Stuck scoring the game’s only goal.
