“I feel confident in our approach going into year two here.”
It’s a simple statement, but one from Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith that should make Michigan State fans excited about what’s to come this season.
Smith spoke with Big Ten Network when they made their training camp stop in East Lansing, Mich. last week, and he noted a couple of key things. One of which was the confidence he has in where the Spartans are in year two with his staff and program construction.
“Year one you are learning a bunch and trying to get things established,” Smith said during the interview. “Now you’re trying to fine tune that, do it better, and I feel confident in our approach going into Year 2 here.”
Smith added that the biggest difference from this time last year to now is the improved depth he’s noticed on the Spartans’ roster across the board.
“Depth jumps out to me,” Smith said when asked on what is different from this time last year. “In this league, the gauntlet of nine conference games and the quality of football, the physicality and all of that, you need some serious depth at almost every position.”
Michigan State went 5-7 in year one under Smith, with a tough finish to the year where depth became a concern for the Spartans. Michigan State experienced a number of key injuries throughout the year, and that helped lead to a 1-4 finish that ultimately led to another year of missing out on a bowl game.
