A 57-year-old man drowned in Lake Superior near McLain State Park in Houghton County on Thursday, June 3, the Michigan State Police said.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that this was an accidental drowning that occurred earlier in the morning on June 3, 2026. No foul play is suspected,” news release from MSP’s Eight District reads.
Troopers from the Calumet post were dispatched to Lake Superior near McLain State Park in Hancock Township at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday near a breakwall leading to the Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Lighthouse after they received reports of a dead man in the water.
The body of the Hancock man was recovered by divers from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.
MSP was assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, and Mercy EMS.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, a nonprofit that tracks drownings on the Great Lakes, said six people drowned in Lake Superior in 2025.
