Detroit — The Tigers have claimed 25-year-old right-hander Yilber Diaz off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and he is expected to report to Triple-A Toledo.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Tigers shifted outfielder Wenceel Perez (fractured orbital bone) to the 60-day IL.
Diaz, the No. 22 prospect in the Diamondbacks system, has pitched in parts of the last three seasons. His one outing this year was rough (seven runs in 0.2 innings).
He is essentially uses a two-pitch mix — 96-mph four-seam fastball and a high-spin (2,600 rpm) slider. He has also mixed an occasional knuckle-curve.
The Venezuela native had a 4.50 ERA in 32 innings at Triple-A Reno this year, with 43 strikeouts and 21 walks in 32 innings.
