It’s not just about seeing Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” it’s about how you see Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.”
The Oscar winner’s mega-sized summer epic is opening July 17, with showtimes starting on July 16. (When are movies going to start advertising their Thursday start dates rather than tying their marketing to Fridays? Alas, that’s another question for another time.)
In addition to regular showings at area theaters, “The Odyssey” will be playing in a handful of premium formats — IMAX, 70mm, Dolby, good ol’ fashioned 35mm — designed to enrich the experience in various ways.
Here’s a list of places in Michigan to see “The Odyssey” in premium formats.
IMAX 70mm
It’s the “highest quality imaging format ever devised,” says Nolan himself, but there’s only one place in Michigan to see “The Odyssey” in this manner, and that’s the Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North.
IMAX
The premium IMAX experience is the most fan-friendly of the premium large formats, and audiences have come to understand they’re seeing a movie on a really big screen, projected with a crisp picture and immersive sound. “The Odyssey” is showing in IMAX at a handful of area theaters, including the AMC Livonia 20, MJR Southgate Digital Cinema 20, MJR Troy, Cinemark Ann Arbor 20, AMC Forum 17 (Sterling Heights), and AMC Star Great Lakes 25 (Auburn Hills). Outside Metro Detroit, it’s also playing at the NCG – Trillium Cinema in Grand Blanc, NCG – Eastwood Cinemas in Lansing and Celebration! Cinema Crossroads in Portage.
70mm
The high-resolution format allows for a picture that is clearer and sharper than standard formats, due to its size. “The Odyssey” is screening in 70mm at the following theaters: AMC Livonia 20, MJR Southgate Digital Cinema 20 and AMC Forum 17 (Sterling Heights).
35mm
The standard 35mm reel has been replaced in most cinemas by a digital projection, but remains a favorite of film connoisseurs. Appropriately, the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor will be showing “The Odyssey” in this classic format.
Dolby Cinema
The area’s handful of Dolby-certified cinemas combine laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound. “The Odyssey” will be showing in fully Dolby at AMC Forum 17 (Sterling Heights), AMC Star Great Lakes 25 (Auburn Hills) and AMC Star Gratiot 15 (Clinton Township).
How to get tickets
