STURGIS — Weather has continued to play a role in the spring sports calendar.
The Sturgis tennis team was able to get in a couple of matches this week and the Trojans won both of those Wolverine Conference matchups. Sturgis beat Vicksburg 6-2 on Tuesday and Otsego 7-1 on Wednesday.
The wins push Sturgis’ overall record out to 9-3 as a team so far this season.
In the match with Vicksburg, Sturgis won two of the singles matches. At first singles, Cora Phillips registered a three-set win after dropping the first 7-5 to Maya Grossman. Phillip rebounded to win the next two sets at 6-0 and 6-3.
Bella Currier also won her match at fourth singles, beating Madison Kanouse 6-0, 6-0.
Gracie Perry was upended at second singles 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6 while Hannah Dickerson dropped a match at third singles to Elise Howard 6-1, 6-1.
Sturgis swept the doubles competitions, each coming in straight sets.
First doubles saw Mya Eicher and Katelyn Halling win over Hannah Moyer and Sofia Martin 6-4, 7-5. The second doubles team of Hannanh Ritchie and Marlee Smith logged a 6-2, 6-0 win over Solana Sutherland and Avalee DelaTorre.
Ella Whitehead and Bailey Cates picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at third doubles over Sabrina Hooker and Erica Centofanti while Lilly Whitehead and Stella Barry won over Carissa Greer and Maria Carrillo Lopez 6-1, 6-1 at fourth doubles.
Sturgis swept the singles competitions against Otsego.
Phillips beat Hailey Burd 7-6, 6-3 at first singles while Perry won over Ellie Korringa 6-4, 6-1 at second singles. Mazie Sterling earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lydia Griffith at third singles and Currier beat Alie Bronson 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles.
Eicher and Halling beat Sara McCaw and Stella Houseman 6-7, 7-5 and 11-9 at first doubles. Cates and Ella Whitehead won their match at third doubles 6-1, 7-5 and Lilly Whitehead and Barry won over Brooklynn Cockerel and Emma Gilson 6-2, 6-0 at fourth doubles.
Smith and Ritchie were upended by Hope Stender and Mila Garrett at second doubles.
Bronson drops to Lansing Christian
The Bronson tennis team was upended by Lansing Christian 6-2 on Thursday. The Vikings got wins on the night from their top two singles players. Aleah Brackett won over Juliet Ivkovich 6-1, 4-6 and 12-10 while Ella Ramsey picked up a 7-6 (12) and 6-2 win at second singles.
