After the American Century accidentally dropped its anchor in the Soo Locks on Wednesday, April 29, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District carried out additional inspections to check for damages.
According to a Thursday update from the Army Corps, the anchor drop was due to a mechanical failure. The American Century was able to retrieve the anchor and back out of the lock on its own. The lock was closed for several hours after the incident.
Initial investigation on Wednesday using a multi-beam sonar survey vessel showed no major findings. Survey crews conducted additional inspections of the Poe Lock on Thursday with a remotely operated underwater vehicle.
“We would like to thank the swift response from the Corps of Engineers Soo team, the U.S. Coast Guard and the shipping industry to minimize the outage and ensure safe operations resumed,” the Army Corps wrote in the Facebook update.
