Evacuated Leland House apartments in Detroit finally gets a buyer

The bankrupt and evacuated Leland House apartments in downtown Detroit has found a buyer, although he is staying mum about any future plans for the property.

A limited liability company called Mudhish Development was the sole bidder for the 21-story building at 400 Bagley in an online auction that concluded Wednesday, April 29. It offered $3 million for the empty building and a nearby parking lot.

Bankruptcy court documents identify Raad Gobah as the individual behind Mudhish Development.

Reached by phone on Friday, May 1, Gobah told the Free Press he was too busy to discuss the future of Leland House or share much about his own background.

“There’s no plan yet,” he said.

The Leland House offered some of the cheapest rents in downtown Detroit before it was evacuated on Dec. 10 after losing electricity due to broken electrical equipment. Over three dozen tenants were displaced by the forced evacuation, and the city of Detroit paid for some of them to stay at a Red Roof Inn in Southfield.

After fighting for months for permission to go back inside and retrieve their possessions, the tenants are scheduled to be allowed in the building between May 4 and May 24, with assistance at the ready from a moving company.

The pending sale of the property is still subject to approval by a federal bankruptcy judge.
