USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith has the Spartans landing in a commonly picked bowl game in his preseason projections for the 2025 season.
Smith released his bowl projections for the upcoming season earlier this week, and like many others, he has Michigan State landing in a bowl game close to home. Smith is projecting the Spartans to end up in the GameAbove Sports Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich.
The Spartans are slated to play Toledo out of the Mid-American Conference in Smith’s bowl projections on USA TODAY Sports.
Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over/under of 5.5, which would suggest they will be right on the bowl eligibility cutline this year. The Spartans went 5-7 last season and have failed to reach a bowl game since 2021 when they beat Pitt in the Peach Bowl.
The Spartans officially open the 2025 season on Friday in a home game against in-state foe Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on FS1.
