Police: Fowlerville Schools bus struck by 29-year-old driver who'd fallen asleep

A school bus in the process of loading a student in Cohoctah Township was struck by a fatigued driver Sept. 9.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Hayner Road east of Owosso Road after a 2009 Ford Escape, driven by a 29-year-old Fowlerville woman, crashed into the back of a bus from Fowlerville Schools.

At the time of the crash, the bus was stopped with flashing red lights. The driver of the Ford Escape, police said, had fallen asleep.

There were five students on the bus, none of whom were injured. The driver of the Ford Escape, however, had to be extricated by the Howell Area Fire Department. She was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with non-life threatening injuries.

“As a reminder to motorists, driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated,” police wrote.
