A Livonia homeowner was fatally shot by police Sunday after pointing a gun at officers who responded to a residential explosion and fire.
Officers and firefighters were called around 7 p.m. to the 20000 block of St. Francis Street after reports of a blast and blaze at a home, the Livonia Police Department said in a release.
After the fire was extinguished, officers searched the home and confirmed no one was inside, according to the statement.
While checking the surrounding area, officers found the homeowner in a neighboring backyard armed with a handgun, police said.
Despite multiple attempts to negotiate, the man raised his weapon toward officers, at which point one officer fired, striking him, according to authorities.
The 61-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
Michigan State Police are investigating. Other details were not released Monday.
The shooting unfolded the day after a Southgate police officer fatally shot a man in a Meijer parking lot during a shoplifting investigation.
