The fire was extinguished, and officers then searched the home and confirmed no one was inside.

“While checking the area, officers located the homeowner in a neighboring backyard armed with a handgun,” police said in the release. “Despite multiple attempts to negotiate with the armed subject, the individual raised his handgun toward the officers. One officer fired his weapon, striking the individual.”

The 61-year-old Livonia man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No Livonia police officers were injured during the incident.

Michigan State Police are conducting the investigation. They did not immediately return a request for comment.
