A new restaurant is coming to Port Huron’s downtown with a unique seasonal menu planned for its customers.
Manna Modern Kitchen is set to open sometime in August at 902 Military St., at the intersection with Water Street next to the Exquisite Corpse Coffee House.
Marisa Wilkins and Calah Wesley, co-owners of the upcoming restaurant, are still in the process of finalizing their menu and deciding when they will open. The two recently ran a test run during Boat Week during which the restaurant served a crispy stuffed beef and lamb pita, grilled chicken thighs with white sauce and a roasted tomatillo chicken atop spiced rice.
The idea for the restaurant, named for the bread-like food in the book of Exodus, came after Wesley tried sambal Wilkins had made with bird’s eye chili for their church.
“I knew right away I loved it,” Wesley said. “It was just instant, the amout of flavors in this.”
Wesley, who had long wanted to open her own restaurant, asked Wilkins to join her in the venture and be the chef.
“I said ‘no thanks, I’m good’,” Wilkins said.
Over time, however, Wesley won her friend over to the idea. Wesley has worked in hospitality her whole life and wanted to open a place where people would find comfort in bold flavors, with dishes based on several global options. As she discussed her plans for a restaurant with Wilkins, the two came to a shared vision and she decided to join into the restaurant.
The owners plan for Manna to have a seasonal menu that will change throughout the year, with a few consistent options year-round. It will primarily be focused around breakfast and lunch. The restaurant will also include delivery and pickup options, and have catering services for events.
Manna will be open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
