New CB Roger McCreary eager to contribute to Lions' 'winning culture'

During his brief four-month stint with the Los Angeles Rams this past season, Roger McCreary was exposed to playoff football for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old defensive back loved every bit of it – from the raised intensity to the enormous stakes attached to each outcome.

“It was great for me,” he said. “People always say the game speed is different from the regular season, and it definitely is. I was excited just to play in that atmosphere. … I feel like it was great for me to experience that, and I look forward to experiencing that more.”

McCreary’s pursuit of that competitive high is what led him to finalize a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions late last week. While McCreary’s new team did not qualify for the postseason in 2025, it has consistently been in the playoff hunt in recent years. As McCreary saw it, the Lions still had something good cooking in Motown.

“I want to be part of … a winning culture, and I feel like that’s the vibe here,” he said.

McCreary rarely tasted success during his first 3½ years in the NFL while playing for the Tennessee Titans, a franchise that began a precipitous downturn shortly after he entered the league as a second-round pick in 2022. McCreary suffered through one losing season after another before Tennessee greenlighted his escape to L.A. last October by trading him to the Rams in a deal that involved a swap of conditional Day 3 picks.

In Los Angeles, McCreary was seen as a versatile depth piece who could play both outside and inside. But in Detroit, he will have the opportunity to compete for a starting role at nickel after Amik Robertson left to join the Washington Commanders at the dawn of free agency earlier this month.

During his last three seasons in Tennessee, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound McCreary was mostly deployed in the slot, where he earned a reputation as a hard-nosed, physical defender who is sticky in man coverage and strong in run support. McCreary characterized his playing style as “instinctive” and “aggressive.” Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin described McCreary as “tenacious.”

“I think he does a lot of things really well,” Ya-Sin added.

In 61 games, 38 of which he started, McCreary produced 257 tackles, 17 pass breakups, three interceptions and one forced fumble. He also allowed 209 receptions on 288 passes thrown his way, per Pro Football Reference.

The numbers tell only part of the story about McCreary, who is ready to write a new chapter in Detroit with an organization that has enjoyed four straight winning seasons.

“I respect how this program has built up and how it’s made a name for itself,” he said. “I’m happy to be a part of that.”
