Man, 18, charged with murder after woman dies from June 5 shooting

LANSING — An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman who was shot in the head in south Lansing on June 5.

Jovanathan Jamar Mitchell, who initially faced a charge of assault with intent to murder, was arraigned on murder and weapons charges in 54A District Court on Wednesday, June 17, court records indicate. Prosecutors upped the assault charge to murder after the woman succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning.

A judge set an $800,000 cash bond for Mitchell, who requested a court-appointed lawyer, records indicate. No attorney was listed for him in the online register of actions.

Mitchell is now charged with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, reckless use of a firearm and felony firearm possession.

The shooting happened about 3 a.m. in the 2700 block of Moores River Drive, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The victim, a 19-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital and was reported in critical condition.

At the time, police said a person of interest was in custody, but no other details about the incident were released.

Lansing police on Wednesday morning announced the woman had died. Her name had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon. Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane announced the charges against Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon.

The June 5 incident was the city’s third homicide of the year and the second resulting from a shooting.

Vincent Beeman, 53, was found dead in the 3900 block of Burneway Drive after officers were dispatched to a medical call on Feb. 8, police said. Aaron Paul Mousseau, 31, has been charged in connection with his death in Eaton County.

Tony Austin, 30, was shot and killed in the 100 block of South Hosmer Street around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, police said. No charges have been announced in that case.
