Have you ever wondered about the laws of local municipalities that are little known or rarely enforced?
The Daily has started a series highlighting such ordinances in Livingston County, providing a light-hearted look into local government and digging deep to find the unique.
Last week, we looked into an interesting ordinance in Brighton. This week, we’re looking at Green Oak Township’s Code of Ordinances.
Don’t jostle in Green Oak Township
According to Chapter 22: Offenses, Section 22-95, it’s “unlawful for a person to jostle or roughly unnecessarily crowd people in a public place.”
To “jostle” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “to make one’s way by pushing and shoving.” The ordinance was approved in January 1978.
For punishment, the municipality cites state law, which says someone convicted of being a disorderly person is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.
