There’s plenty of fun happening this week in Northern Michigan before the Fourth of July weekend.
Here’s what we recommend:
Join the Pop & Paint
Pop into the Cheboygan Area Public Library at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1 for a Tiny Pop & Paint workshop.
The painting session includes a tiny canvas and tiny treats. Registration is required.
You can choose to take your tiny art home with you, or add it to the library’s upcoming Community Tiny Art Show, which will be on display July 18-24.
The art show connects to the 2025 summer reading theme of “Color Our World.” Submissions for the art show in all mediums — from drawings to photos to poems to origami, it just has to be tiny! — must be 8×8” or smaller. Children, teens and adults are all invited to participate. Artwork can be dropped off at the library front desk through July 15.

Enjoy a hatchery tour
Get an up-close look at how the Oden State Fish Hatchery rears brown trout and rainbow trout for both inland and Great Lakes waters during a guided tour at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2.
The group will meet at the South Ayr Road entrance and then explore the grounds through the nature trails, interpretive exhibits and interactive displays. They will visit the brood stock facility and see fish swim in the river through the underwater stream chamber. Additional exhibits include a vintage 1914-1935 Wolverine train car and the visitors center.

Learn about telescopes and astronomy
Dr. Allison Strom will host “Seeing with New Eyes: How Telescopes View the Universe” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2 at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park near Mackinaw City.
During the presentation, Strom will show how raw telescope data is transformed into images and discuss the techniques used by astronomers to capture and process data from various telescopes, both on Earth and in space. She will discuss how these pictures are created and what they can tell us about the cosmos.

Registration for the races begin at 10 a.m. in Jean Jardine Park by city hall. There are divisions for puppies, adults and senior racers. The races are set to start at 11 a.m.
