The Lansing area welcomed two restaurants in January, but also lost three retail stores.
Eiffel Waffle Creamery opened its first location in the state at a storefront in East Lansing and Fidler’s on the Grand reopened after a more than three-year closure.
Elsewhere, Banana Republic’s only Lansing-area store at the Eastwood Towne Center, and three local GameStop locations closed during the month.
Here’s a look at what opened, closed, and one restaurant that’s moving to a new space, in January.
Eiffel Waffle Creamery, East Lansing
Where: 115 Bailey St.
The details: Eiffel Waffle Creamery, a chain of ice cream and waffle cone shops with seven locations in Illinois, opened its first Michigan location and its eighth overall in downtown East Lansing on Jan. 1. DeWitt couple Awais Ahmad and Daniyal Nawaz own the franchise location.
The shop offers a variety of ice cream flavors served in “bubble waffle cones” with toppings and shakes, refreshers and drinks, including matcha and espresso. The space offers seating for nearly 40 people.

Fidler’s on the Grand, Lansing
Where: 4805 N. Grand River Ave.
The details: Fidler’s on the Grand, a popular family-run breakfast and lunch restaurant, closed in late 2022, has reopened.
Jacob Taylor is at the helm now, having recovered after his entire family was injured in a 46-car pileup on the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County on Dec. 23, 2022. He spent four years making and assembling dishes, contributing to the menu, and weathering the COVID-19 pandemic at the restaurant alongside his family before the crash. The restaurant closed after the crash.
Fidler’s on the Grand reopened on Jan. 28 with a takeout model and a limited menu including popular dishes, including the Jamestown Loaded, a biscuits and gravy dish, breakfast bowls and tacos, patty melts, French dips and a few new additions such as smash burgers.
Sit-down dining will return eventually, Taylor said.

Here’s what closed in January
Banana Republic, Lansing Township
Where: At Eastwood Towne Center, 3020 Centre Blvd.
The details: The Lansing area’s only Banana Republic location at the Eastwood Towne Center closed its doors on Jan. 22.
The clothing retailer has six other stores in Michigan, including in Auburn Hills, Byron Center, Howell, Novi, Rochester Hills and Troy.
GameStop, Delta and Lansing townships
Where: 2908 Town Center Blvd., 5451 W. Saginaw Hwy. and 619 N. Marketplace Blvd.
The details: GameStop, a Texas-based video game retailer, closed its Lansing Township and two Delta Township locations earlier this month. Listings for all three stores on the company’s website indicate they no longer have open hours. Locations at 438 E. Edgewood Blvd. and the Meridian Mall in Okemos remain open. In a March 2025 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), GameStop said it planned on closing “a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” which ends on Jan. 31, 2026, per the documents, USA TODAY reported.
Going, Going, Gone! by DICK’S Sporting Goods, Delta Township
Where: 5845 W. Saginaw Hwy.
The details: Going, Going, Gone! by DICK’S Sporting Goods, a discount sporting goods and clothing store, closed its location in Delta Center, a plaza off West Saginaw Highway, on Jan. 17.
The store sold clothing and shoes priced at up to 70% off, according to the company’s website. The company operates one other Going, Going, Gone! by DICK’S Sporting Goods in Utica. DICK’S Sporting Goods operates two Lansing-area stores at the Meridian Mall in Okemos and at the Eastwood Towne Center in Lansing Township.
Babe’s Corner, Lansing
Where: 800 E. Michigan Ave.
The details: Babe’s Corner, a local sandwich and ice cream spot, is moving from its current space on East Michigan Avenue to a space inside Strange Matter Coffee’s downtown location, 331 S. Washington Square.
The restaurant closed its space on Jan. 24, according to the business’s Facebook page.
“It is a bittersweet move and I hope you follow us over, said the Jan. 19 social media post. “It is only 0.8 of a mile away!”
A reopening date hasn’t been announced yet.
