HARTLAND — Lakeview had the lead and had a pitcher throwing a perfect game nearly halfway through its regional semifinal. However, the game slipped away from there as the Spartans saw an impressive season come to an end.
Howell defeated Lakeview 5-1 in a Division 1 regional semifinal in high school softball action at Hartland High School on Saturday, June 6.

The Spartans jumped out in front first on an RBI single by Claire VanDis in the first inning. That lead held up as Lakeview pitcher Angelia Palma was putting up zeroes early with a no-hitter going through three innings.
Howell broke through with three runs in the fourth and added two runs in the fifth to secure the win.
VanDis finished with two hits with Delaney McCullough getting on base twice on walks.
Howell pitcher Allison Ulanowski held Lakeview to two hits, striking out eight.
Lakeview ends the season at 19-21-1, having won two district titles in the last three years.
Division 2 baseball at Stevensville-Lakeshore
Coldwater won a regional championship with a 7-2 win over Wayland in high school baseball action at Stevensville-Lakeshore on Saturday, June 6. That victory put Coldwater in the Division 2 state quarterfinals later the same day where the Cardinals lost to Vicksburg, 12-1.
Owen Tappenden earned the win for Coldwater in the regional title game, allowing four hits in five-plus innings while striking out seven and giving up two earned runs. Tappenden added a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with a home run. Rylan Edwards went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cardinals.
In the quarterfinal, Coldwater was held to five hits.
A handful of Coldwater pitchers couldn’t hold down the Vicksburg offense as it jumped up 4-0 in the first inning.
Division 3 softball at Hanover-Horton
Homer saw its season come to an end with a 5-2 loss to Grass Lake in a Division 3 regional semifinal at Hanover-Horton. Homer outhit Grass Lake 8-5, but didn’t score until the sixth inning. Riley Zuck had two hits for Homer, which ends the year at 22-12.
Division 4 softball at Mendon
Gobles mercied Colon 14-1 in six innings in this Division 4 regional semifinal at Mendon. Colon ends the year at 17-7. Alyssa Hess went 2-for-3 for Colon in the loss.
Girls soccer
No. 2-ranked Gull Lake faced the No. 1 ranked team in the state in a battle that should have probably happened in the state finals, instead of this Division 2 regional title game.
No. 1-ranked Hudsonville Unity Christian defeated Gull Lake 3-0 in regional action at Otsego on Friday. Hudsonville Unity Christian advances to face Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in the state semifinals. Gull Lake ends the year at 16-2-3.
State golf
Marshall’s Clark Erwin finished 15th in the state at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state championships at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University. Erwin qualified as an individual in the state finals and finished with a 74 in the first round on Friday to sit at 10th overall. On Saturday, Erwin carded a 77 to give him a two-day score of 151. Gull Lake’s Charles Wilke also finished 15th at 151 for the two rounds.
