Holland Christian, Hamilton soar to top-10 finishes at girls state tennis finals

The Holland Christian girls tennis team tied for sixth at the Division 3 state finals and Hamilton also earned a top-10 finish.

The Maroons scored 12 points to match Chelsea. Detroit Country Day won with 34, followed by Bloomfield Hills Marian (30), East Grand Rapids (28), Grand Rapids Christian (19) and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (17). Hamilton finished ninth with seven points.

The Maroons were led by their doubles flights, with the No. 2 pair of Hope Bruinsma and Lily Wierenga making the state semifinals.

Bruinsma and Wierenga had a bye, beat Williamston 6-0, 6-3 then beat Grand Rapids Christian 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The Maroons faced Detroit Country Day in the semifinals and lost 6-0, 6-1.

Holland Christian’s No. 1 doubles team of Kassie Evenhouse and Stella Klooster had a bye, defeated Sturgis 6-2, 6-0, then faced Bloomfield Hills Marian in the quarterfinals where they lost 6-4, 6-3.

Holland Christian’s Iyla Holmes reached the quarterfinals at No. 2 singles. She had a bye, then beat Haslett’s Lexi Pridgeon 6-1, 6-0 then was beaten by Bloomfield Hills Marian’s Elizabeth Torok, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, Holland Christian’s Evie Traverse had a bye then beat Williamston’s Leia Jones 6-1, 7-5, in the second round before falling to Grand Rapids Christian’s Anwen Amash 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

At No. 1 singles, Holland Christian’s Camryn Nadig beat Hamilton’s Allison Lezman 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, then lost to top-seeded Chloe Conniff of Detroit Country Day, 6-0, 6-1.

Holland Christian’s No. 3 Chloe Tait won her first-round match 6-3, 6-2 over Parma Western’s Taylor Bradley, but her run ended against Country Day’s Addie Grebinski.

The Maroons’ Izzy Delcalzo and Lucia VanKlompenberg beat St. Clair in the first round 6-2, 6-0 then lost 7-5, 6-4 to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood.

HC’s Chloe Dangler and Jadyn Smith had a bye, then lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 to Grand Rapids Christian in the second round.

Hamilton’s top doubles team reached the quarterfinals, leading the Hawkeye finishes.

Hamilton’s Eran Meiste and Sophia Blauwkamp had a bye, then beat Williamston 6-4, 6-1 before meeting East Grand Rapids in the quarterfinals, losing a tough 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.

Taylor Heer and Maddie Jipping lost in the second round to Grand Rapids Christian in a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 close match after a bye.

Hamilton No. 3 singles player Kylie Rietema reached the quarterfinals at No. 3 singles. After a bye, she defeated Grosse Ile’s Nya Lee-Wah 6-4, 6-2 before falling 6-0, 6-0 to East Grand Rapids’ Evelyn Gingras.

Hamilton’s No. 4 doubles team of Adele Plycraft and Allie VanOmmen had a bye, then beat Yale 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Bloomfield Hills Marian in the quarterfinals.

At No. 2, Hamilton’s Brynn Bolhuis won her first-round match 6-0, 6-2 over Fowlerville’s Adisyn Grimm, but didn’t get past East Grand Rapids’ Farha Malviya in the second round.

Hamilton’s Billie Lucas had a bye then lost 6-2, 6-0 to Country Day’s Kyra Zacharias in the second round.

Hamilton’s No. 3 doubles team of Sadie Buus and Kennedy Reitzel had a bye then were edged 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 by Williamston in the second round.
