General Motors is rolling out Gemini with Google Built-in, an advanced conversational artificial intelligence service, with nearly 4 million active vehicles eligible for the update.
The Detroit automaker said on April 28 that the new system is an upgrade from the current Google Assistant that it says is a smarter, more intuitive AI assistant that improves the longer customers use it.
Introducing Gemini is another step in the automaker’s ultimate goal of rolling out a custom-built AI assistant trained on proprietary vehicle data “to help anticipate your every need,” GM said in a blog post. GM leadership said at an event in New York City last October that the Google partnership is a stopgap until GM is able to integrate its own AI system directly into its vehicles connected by OnStar.
Newer vehicles starting with model year 2022 Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMCs are eligible for the rollout of Google Built‑in, which GM said could take several months.
There is no cost for the Gemini update itself, according to GM spokeswoman Anna Yu, who said in an email with the Detroit Free Press that the update arrives as an automatic Play Store update to the Google Assistant app if the customer has eligible software.
Customers would be notified once their vehicle can receive the update via a message on their infotainment screen.
To use Gemini, customers must do the following:
According to the company, Gemini will expand to additional GM markets and support more languages over time.
