ANN ARBOR, Mich. — After a very conservative game plan against Oklahoma in Week 2, it was shocking to see Michigan football come out against an overmatched Central Michigan team and suddenly have a dynamic offense that was capable of putting up 63 points.
After the win over the Chippewas, acting head coach Biff Poggi claimed that the Wolverines ‘took the air out of the ball’ against the Sooners but will no longer do so with Bryce Underwood leading at quarterback. While Underwood was the focal point of the offense on Saturday, it should also be noted that the offense more so resembled what was expected with coordinator Chip Lindsey at the helm.
Sophomore tight end Hogan Hansen wasn’t surprised to see the offense flourish in Week 3, noting that what fans got to see for the first time more closely resembled that which was installed and practiced in spring and fall than what was seen in Norman in Week 2.
“I just think Chip’s a really smart coach, and he can play whatever game we need to play,” Hansen said. “Last week, it was cool to see us open up the offense and stuff, but I mean, we were doing that all fall camp. And I think it is like something you will see more as we go throughout the season — just how smart of a play caller he is, and he’ll put us in the right position, and keep putting us in the right position to go make plays.”
With that, getting to play the offense as installed, Hansen says that the players were able to play fast and play loose. And everything else fell into place.
“It wasn’t really an emphasis in that way; it was more just control what you can control, we’re going to go put you guys in good positions to go make plays,” Hansen said. “And just don’t worry about, like, we got all the coaching handled and stuff like that. So I wouldn’t say we were too worried, I just say we knew this last week, we were going to go light the scoreboard up.”
The Wolverines vow that this isn’t a one-off and that the plan for the team moving forward will be to have an explosive, dynamic attack on that side of the ball. They’ll need it this week with a road game at Nebraska on the docket.
