A historic attraction near Lower Michigan’s northernmost point won’t be opening this year.
Dousman’s Mill, also known as Historic Mill Creek, will remain closed until May 2027 due to construction delays related to renovation of its visitor’s center, a spokesperson for the Mackinac Island State Park System said.
The construction delay is not related to ongoing flooding concerns in the area, but is due to heavy snowfall from earlier in the year, said Dominick Miller, chief of marketing for the parks system.
“We plan to reopen and be full-go in May 2027,” Miller said.
Historic Mill Creek recently rebranded as Dousman’s Mill in honor of Mackinac Island merchant Michael Dousman, who owned the site and operated its mill and farm from 1819 through the 1830s.
Located about 4 miles south of Mackinaw City near the Lake Huron shoreline, the 625-acre site once produced crops and milled lumber for sale to the island.
It opened to the public in 1984 with a reconstructed mill dam and sawmill. It also features 3 miles of nature trails and a treetop tower with views of Lake Huron, the Straits of Mackinac and Mackinac Island, in addition to historical educational programming.
