Hillsdale Market House announces closure after 85 years

Hillsdale Market House, a family-owned grocery and dining destination that’s served the community for more than eight decades, will close later this month, according to a social media announcement March 15.

The closure will suspend operations at several on-site restaurants and businesses, including Sharon’s House of Pancakes, Underdog’s Sliders Spirits and Sports, Krispy Krunchy Chicken and Blimpie Subs and Salads. Anytime Fitness and Biggby Coffee will remain open, according to owner-operator Brett Boyd.

The family cited ongoing financial challenges, despite multiple reinvestments in the business.

As part of the wind-down, the store will begin discounting merchandise March 17, with many items reduced 25% — excluding meat, produce, alcohol and select other products. Remaining items will be discounted 50% from March 27 to March 29. Unsold inventory after the final day will be transferred to Market House in Hudson or donated to local food pantries.

The restaurants inside Hillsdale Market House will remain open through March 28.

The closure follows Boyd’s decision to list both locations for sale in October 2025, as the fourth-generation owner publicly weighed retirement while continuing to operate the stores during the sales process.

The property at 210 W. Carleton Road remains available for lease or purchase. The family is reviewing potential opportunities that could allow some popular departments or restaurants — including Underdog’s and Sharon’s House of Pancakes — to return under new ownership.

According to the announcement, the Boyds remain committed to Hudson Market House, where operations will continue and future investments are planned.

Boyd thanked longtime employees and the community, highlighting the store’s involvement in local events, charitable giving and service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You were never just associates to us — you were part of our family,” Boyd said. “Your determination and service in incredible times of need will never be forgotten.”

Boyd said saying goodbye to the location was deeply personal.

“Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you’re a hometown kid,” he said. “But we truly did everything possible to remain a part of this community for as long as we could.”
