A hiker has died after a fall from a “significant height” near Manganese Falls in the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor on June 21, police say.
The man in his 50s fell about 25 feet off a cliff while hiking in the remote area, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a June 23 social media post.
“At this time, the incident appears to be a tragic accident,” the sheriff’s office said.
Keweenaw County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the location at about 12:10 p.m. June 21, the post said.
Lack of cell service and limited radio communication in the rural area complicated first responders’ rescue efforts, the sheriff’s office said.
Manganese Falls is south of Lake Fanny Hooe, Fort Wilkins State Park and Copper Harbor. The site features falls with a drop of about 45 feet through a rocky gorge, Visit Keweenaw said.
Copper Harbor Fire, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan State Parks and Calumet Township Fire also responded to the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
Police do not suspect foul play in the case, the post said.
Police are not releasing the victim’s identity at this time to respect his family’s privacy, the release said.
