The Detroit Lions have picked makeup dates for the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League state championship tournament.
A power outage that impacted Ford Field last weekend forced the Lions to postpone the two-day event. It’ll now be played Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7.
At the time of the postponement on May 30, officials at Ford Field issued a statement: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Michigan girls high school flag football championship will be postponed to a later date. Ford Field is currently experiencing power connection issues that are affecting the ability to open the stadium at this time. Participating teams will be made aware of the makeup dates and times for the games.”
Now, Wyandotte Roosevelt and Wayne Memorial will open the tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday, followed by Goodrich and Flint Carman-Ainsworth at 9:30 a.m., Bloomfield Hills and Warren Woods-Tower at 11 a.m., L’Anse Creuse North and Detroit King at 12:30 p.m., Brighton and Clawson at 2 p.m., Redford Thurston and Plymouth-Canton at 3:30 p.m. and Gibraltar Carlson and Detroit Leadership at 5 p.m.
Defending state champion St. Joseph earned a first-round bye and will face the Roosevelt-Wayne winner to open the second round at 8 a.m. Sunday. The semifinal games are slated for 2 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, while the championship game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The postponement shouldn’t be all bad.
The tournament’s original start date fell on what’s considered the busiest day of the MHSAA calendar, with the track and field state championships, baseball and softball district championships and several other sports, including soccer, lacrosse and volleyball, also competing in the postseason. Many flag football teams were going to be without some of their best players, who would’ve been on the track or the diamond.
Now, many teams could be closer to full strength, as only a handful are still going in softball, soccer and lacrosse.
