A former Michigan State football commit is set to make his professional debut… in baseball, though.
Former Spartans commit Jase Bowen has reportedly been called up to the big leagues by the San Diego Padres. He is set to make his MLB debut soon after the call up from Triple-A El Paso.
Bowen, originally from Toledo, Ohio, was a three-star wide receiver prospect in the 2019 class and committed to Michigan State out of high school. He signed with the Spartans — then led by Mark Dantonio — during the early signing period but ultimately elected to pursue a career in baseball.
Bowen was selected by the Padres in the MLB Draft in 2019, which ultimately led to him electing to play baseball instead of football for the Spartans. It’s clear Bowen is a star athlete and it would have been interesting to see if he would have made a difference for the Spartans on the gridiron had he went that route. Ultimately, picking baseball was clearly the right choice as he is set to play at the highest level of the game.
