Construction workers were placing steel decking on top of steel trusses for a construction project at the Main Street high school when at least five trusses fell 40 feet and struck the two workers, both men, at about 2:15 pm., Benton Township Fire Department Capt. Richard Sullivan said.

“We are heartbroken to confirm that one of the workers injured during Monday’s incident at the Potterville High School construction site has passed away,” Clark Construction President Robert LaLonde said in a June 17 email. “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic loss.

“The second individual remains hospitalized, and we are respecting the privacy of those involved.”

LaLonde said the two men injured were Eagle Enterprises employees helping out on a gymnasium addition project at the Main Street high school.

“Clark Construction Company is serving as the construction manager and is fully cooperating with authorities and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) as the investigation moves forward,” LaLonde said.

Neither Sullivan nor LaLonde have identified the men who Sullivan said were taken to the UM-Health Sparrow Lansing hospital after they were pinned by steel trusses that fell.

Sullivan said during the evening June 16 that one, in his mid-20s, was in critical condition and his co-worker, in his mid-30s, was in stable condition and that MIOSHA was handling the investigation.

“The steel work was being performed by one of our trade partners, not by direct employees of Clark Construction,” said Zack Reed, Clark Construction’s marketing director, said in an email.
